Ingredients for the filling and dough

Apple filling : 1.5 pounds Granny Smith apples thinly sliced, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, 1/4 cup granulated sugar
Crumb Topping (dough): 1 cup flour (120 grams), ¼ cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon maple extract, ¼ cup cold cream butter, ⅓ cup milk

Preparation

How to make this delicious campfire apple pie?

Turn on the BBQ outdoor cooking stove or other fire pit so that it is at a good temperature.
You can prepare this apple pie in two ways. Directly over fire, or with charcoal / Briquettes
Charcoal: 7 coals under the Dutch Oven, 14 coals on top of the lid.
Wood fire: 3-4 small logs under your hanging dutch oven, 8-10 large ones coal on top of the lid.
To prepare the filling: Peel the apples and slice thinly with a knife. Put them in the Dutch Oven and sprinkle with ¼ cup of sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. Stir with your hands to completely coat the apples with the sugar and cinnamon.
To prepare the topping (dough) Mix the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, ¼ cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, salt) in a mixing bowl. Cut the butter into small pieces with your knife and add to the bowl. Using your fingers, rub the butter into the dry ingredients until a crumbly flour forms. Add the milk and mix gently to form a dough.
Prepare crumble topping: Tear off pieces of dough and place them on top of your spiced apples. You want small dough crumbs evenly distributed in your Dutch oven, not one big blob of dough in the middle.
Baking the apple pie: Cover your dutch oven. Place it on a ring of seven coals, then place 14 coals evenly on top of the lid (this creates the same heat as a 350° oven). Bake for 30-40 minutes, until the topping is golden brown. If cooking with wood, keep the heat low and place several coals on top of the lid.

Enjoy your meal!
